Robert Mone was jailed in 1976 for murder.

Thomas McCulloch and his gay lover Robert Mone murdered Iain Simpson 40 and Neil McLellan 46 during an escape from Carstairs State Hospital, Lanarkshire. They were both parole patients giving them some freedom in the hospital. Neil McLellan was a nursing officer in charge of a drama group and the men were part of his group. In the early evening of 30 November a routine check on patients in the group was made and some were missing. They then found Neil McLellan dead and Iain Simpson, a patient,  seriously injured and a firemans axe missing. Iain Simpson later died. They later discovered that Thomas McCulloch and Robert Mone had made their way over a perimeter fence with a weighted rope ladder.

Whilst on the run they then murdered PC George Taylor who thought they had had an accident and stopped to help them. They then stole his police car and drove away until it crashed on the A702. Two men in a van stopped to help them but they were seriously injured when the pair assaulted them and stole their van. They then drove off to Townfoot Farm, Roberton were they stole a farmers car. Then they drove off South along the A74 until they crashed the car at a roundabout just North of Carlisle.

Their 6 hour escape ended with them taking a family hostage in a house in Carlisle.

Thomas McCulloch was originally detained for storming a Dundee school and shooting dead Nanette Hanson 26 who was a pregnant needlework teacher in 1967 when he was 19.

Robert Mone was originally convicted of the murders of Agnes Waugh 78, Jane Simpson 70 and Catherine Miller 29. At his trial it was heard that he had boasted that his son, Robert Mone was a killer and that he wanted to be in with him. His son was sentenced in 1966. It was also heard that he had boasted that he had wanted to make a name for himself. He strangled them all with a sock.
