Allen Morgan was convicted of conspiracy to murder his 36-year-old wife Carol Morgan.

Carol Morgan was murderd in 1981 by an unknown third party in the she she and her husband ran. She had been attacked with an axe or machette after which £435 in cash and 1,400 cigarettes was stolen.

The court heard that he had paid an unknown person to murder her so that he could marry another woman.

His new wife was also tried for conspiracy to murder but was acquitted.

Allen Morgan discovered Carol Morgan's body when he got back from a trip to the cinema with their two children. However, the prosecution said that the trip to the cinema was designed to give him a cast-iron alibi, adding:

The killer had some inside information before entering premises. The obvious conclusion was that the killer was told by Allen Morgan where he would find the cash, which may well have constituted part payment for the murder.

At the time the police considered that her murder had been a burglary that had gone wrong, however, following a cold case review in 2018, the police found a new witness who told them that Allen Morgan had wanted to find a hitman to kill his wife.

The woman, who had been 17-year-old at the time said that she had met Allen Morgan in a public house and that he had asked her whether her ex-boyfriend knew anyone who could kill. She said:

He'd say, 'I hate Carol', 'I don't want to be married to her', 'I wish she'd die', 'wouldn't an accident be nice?'.

The court heard that Allen Morgan had had spiralling debts at te time and that Carol Morgan had made a will leaving everything to him. It was also heard that the shop had a life insurance policy linked to it as well.

Folowing his conviction, the police appealed for help in finding the hired killer and the police said that they were interested in speaking to people that frequented pubs in the Linslade, Leighton Buzzard and Dunstable area in the 1980s, including the The Dolphin, The Ship, The Waggon and Horses and The Clay Pipe.
