John Apelgren was convicted of the manslaughter 22-year-old Eileen Cotter.
He killed her in 1974 but was not arrested until 2019 adter DNA found on her clothing was matched to him. Her case had been reviewed in 2012 but no match was found. However, in 2019 John Apelgren was cautioned for assaulting his wife and his DNA taken and later found to match that found on Eileen Cotter's clothing.
When Eileen Cotter was questioned, he said that he didn't know Eileen Cotter, but admiited having had sexual relations with other women.
He was also convicted of having indecent assaulted an 18-year-old at his wedding reception on 14 October 1972. THe girl said that she had not come forward at the time as she was afraid that she would be blamed.
Eileen Cotter was found was found dead in Hamilton Park, Highbury on 1 June 1974.
She was found to gave been strangled and to have had a black eye and bruising to the neck and face.
It was thought that she had been thrown out of a car after having had sex and was found in the position in which she had fallen. Her tights and underwear were still around her right leg at the time and her shoes were missing.
