Barzan Sadoun and Seyid Moisawi were convicted of killing Steven John Cawthorn 35.

Barzan Sadoun was convicted of murder.

Seyid Moisawi was found to be unfit to plead but the court found that he 'committed the acts in the fight that left Steven with a fatal stab wound'.

A third man thought to have been involved and wanted for murder fled abroad following the incident.

Steven Cawthorn was stabbed him during an altercation in Leonard Street between 2.30pm and 3.30pm on 26 July 2017.

He was found collapsed between Freehold Street and Grosvenor Street and was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary shortly after the attack but died later the same day at 9pm.

Neighbours had called the police to say, 'that the men had pieces of wood and sticks, and were repeatedly hitting each other with them'. It was said that during the fight that someone ran into a got a large kitchen knife and then chased Steven Cawthorn with it and stabbed him in the back.

The police said that they thought that it was a targeted attack but that it was not racially motivated.

A man that was thought to have been the main suspect fled the country a few hours after the attack. The police said, 'We are satisfied that we have identified the key suspect in this case who we believe to have fled the country within hours of the incident last year. We are actively following up enquiries to locate the suspect. We are also working with the Crown Prosecution Service to explore extradition opportunities enabling us to further our investigation, and to bring to justice the person responsible for the death of Steven Cawthorn'.

Three men were arrested shortly after the incident but no charges were made.

The area where Steven Cawthorn was murdered was known for its drug dealing. One man said, 'It used to be really nice here but recently it has become a bad place to live. I wouldn't recommend anyone living down here, especially if they have young kids. There are lots of movements from certain flats at all times in the day and night and people are openly dealing and taking drugs. You don't feel comfortable going outside your own front door. You daren't look at someone in case they take it the wrong way'.

Another person said, 'We knew something like this was going to happen sooner or later to someone, it was only a matter of time', whilst another said that he been  threatened by a man with the sword over some drugs two months earlier, saying, 'I was just chilling with my friend and some people kept knocking on our door. They asked us for drugs and I told them they had got the wrong house, but they kept on knocking at the door. They were confused. I asked them what they were doing and that's when they threatened me. It was so scary'.

Steven Cawthorn had a son.
