William MacDowell was convicted of the murder of his lover Renee MacRae and their three-year-old son Andrew MacRae.
They disappeared on 12 November 1976 and their remains have never been found.
Renee MacRae's car was later found in a lay-by on the A9 at Dalmagarry, south of Inverness.
He was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years, but died in prison about four months later on Wednesday 15 February 2023.
