Tiernan Darnton was convicted of the murder of his grandmother Mary Gregory 94.
He set fire to her bungalow in the early hours of 28 May 2018. When the fire brigade was called out they found her unconscious under a table and she was taken to hospital but died 4 hours later.
The fire was initially considered to have been caused by accident but Tiernan Darnton later made comments during a counselling session in May 2019 to the effect that he had started the fire with a cigarette lighter.
When the police then investigated his statement they found that he had also admitted to having started the fire in a game of truth or dare with friends shortly after the event.
