Anthony Kemp was convicted of the murder of Christopher Ainscough 50.
He beat him to death at his home in December 1983 and later walked into a police station towards the end of 2020 and confessed.
It was thought that he had killed him between 2 and 5 December 1983 by hitting him with a 2.4kg marble ashtray.
After his confession the police found his DNA on a cigarette that was found at the scene.
He said that he had met Christopher Ainscough on a night out and that Christopher Ainscough had invited Anthony Kemp back to his home in Windmill Court, Shoot-Up Hill.
At the trial it was heard that it was not disputed that Christopher Ainscough might have tried to touch Anthony Kemp, but the prosecution said that if that had happened then all he would have had to do was walk away and that to beat him to death was a wholly disproportionate response.
Anthony Kemp would have been 22-years-old at the time.
When Anthony Kemp gave himself up he said to the police, 'You know what, I'm homeless, and I'm not going to sleep on the streets'.
Christopher Ainscough had been a head-water.
