Keith Rose murdered Juliet Rowe 42.
He shot her point blank in the back through the head and heart after she tried to escape from him while he was attempting to kidnap her so he could ransom her in September 1981.
He wasn't caught until he later attempted to kidnap the deputy chairman of a Surrey food wholesaling company.
In 1995 he escaped from Parkhurst Prison on the Isle of Wight with another man. They had planned to steel a plane and fly off the island but they couldn't and were later caught walking down a road near the prison.
