Alan Bowen was attacked by Graham Kenyon on 11 October 1998 as he walked to meet his wife at a bingo hall. Graham Kenyon lay in wait for Alan Bowen in a secluded spot in Broom Street, Hanley and then beat him about the head and cut his throat as he passed.
Alan Bowen had a previous conviction for the manslaughter of his first wife.
