Mark Goldstraw was convicted of the murders of Samantha Carter 16, Patricia Carter 10, Marcus Carter 7 and Roddy Hine and had previously been convicted for the manslaughter of Deborah Wheatley.
He set fire to their house after Samantha Carter dumped him.
At the time of the murder he was on early release from a jail after having previously been convicted of killing another girlfriend.
He beat her to death with a mallet when she refused to move in with him. He was convicted in 2001.
