Lee Newell was convicted of murder in 1989.
In 2013 he was convicted of the murder of Subhan Anwar who he strangled with the help of Gary Smith. They strangled him with Subhan Anwar's tracksuit bottoms.
In November 2014 he was attacked by another murderer Gary Vinter, in HMP Woodhill and lost an eye. Gary Vinter puched Lee Newell, knocking him to the ground and then puched and kicked him on the ground causing him severe brain injury and the loss of an eye. However, Lee Newell took the Ministry of Justice to court claiming that they had breached their cuty to 'keep the claimant reasonably safe' and in April 2021 he was awarded £85,000 in damages and £7,000 in interest.
