Ian Karl Kay murdered John Penfold 21, a Woolworths shop assistant during a knife point robbery. He was later convicted of attempted murder in 1997.
He had carried out a string of robberies at knife point at shops before the killing including a robbery at Martins Newsagents in Parkwood, Maidstone, a robbery at the Woolworths store in Bath Road, Hounslow, Woolworths in Northold Road, South Harrow, the Woolworths branch in Rayners Lane, Harrow, the Iceland Freezer Centre in Desborough Road, High Wycombe, the Bath Road Woolworths store again, another branch in Uxbridge Road, Hayes, a store in Camberley, and a Woolworths branch in Yewsley, before the Teddington store robbery in which John Penfold died.
In a police interview he said that John Penfold was a have-a-go hero who deserved what he got.
At the time he was serving an 8 year sentence in Maidstone prison for a similar attack on a man at a store 3 years earlier who was stabbed and left with a paralysed arm. He had been out of prison in January 1994 on home leave and had robbed a post office of £2k within 2 hours of being released.
The court heard that he was a devil-worshipper and fantasised about chopping peoples toes off with bolt croppers.
On 10 March 1997 he attacked Peter Sutclife, the serial killer, in Broadmoor with a pen, stabbing him in the eye. The National Archives state that whilst in Broadmoor he attacked a fellow inmate for which he was convicted of attempted murder and made the subject of a hospital order without restriction as to time, presumably the attack on Peter Sutclifee. He would strut around the high-security Henley ward in Broadmoor like a cockerel in a show of bravado to prove himself and become top dog and had walked into Peter Sutclife's room where Peter Sutclife would write letters and carried out the attack. After he was seen leaving the room calmly with a smile before Peter Sutclifee was found inside.
The National Archives note him as being called Florian Anciave, previously Karl Roberts, also known as Ian Kavi Kay.
