Matthew Tinling stabbed Richard Hamilton 46 to death, stabbing him 21 times to the head, neck and legs around 2am on March 28 2012.
In March 2023 he was convicted of attempted murder after he tried to kill a prison guard.
Richard Hamilton Murder
The court heard that he had copied scenes from the horror film Saw VI including chopping through Richard Hamilton's spine. He also cut his jugular vein. They found a copy of the film on DVD in his room. He also tortured him to get his pin number for his bank account from which he withdrew £240 to that he used to buy crack cocaine. The police used CCTV evidence to determine the time of the murder by analysing movement of the curtains in the room the murder took place in.
The court heard that Richard Hamilton was targetted because he was richer than the other hostel residents because he received £197 disability allowance every fortnight on top of £272 in other benefits.
They had lived together in sheltered accomodation at a homless hostel on Shirland Road, Maida Vale. Richard Hamilton's body was found the next day.
They found Matthew Tinling's DNA on the curtains as well as on a credit card holder.
Whilst on remand for Richard Hamilton's murder, Matthew Tinling was treated as a high security risk after he attacked a prison officer.
2023 Attempted Murder
He was convicted of attempted murder on 18 March 2023 after he tried to kill a guard at HMP Woodhill in February 2021. The guard had been escourting him back to his cell after a work out at the time.
